There’s nothing that compares to being all alone with your dog at the park. Well actually, nothing can compare to that precious pup of yours anyway! Maybe you worry whether or not your canine is getting all of their necessary vitamins through their diet, but have you ever wondered do dogs get vitamin D from the sun?
What is vitamin D?
Vitamin D is made out of steroid like molecules and is actually very similar to other steroid hormones such as testosterone, estradiol, cortisone, and progesterone. It regulates over 2,000 genes, however it needs to bind to a membrane receptor in the body before it can begin to provide a positive effect. Receptors can be found in many different tissues all over the body.
When your exposed to the sun, a reaction occurs that allows skin cells to manufacture vitamin D. After you eat something with vitamin D such as tuna, salmon, cheese, or egg yolks, your liver processes into an “activated form”. When it becomes activated, it provides an anti-inflammatory effect to the tissues involved.
Does my dog get vitamin D from the sun?
If you guessed the dogs fur would block most of the rays from the sun, you would be correct! What’s interesting is that dogs get most of their vitamin D during their grooming! Sunlight exposure causes skin oils that are rich in pro-vitamin to change into vitamin D. So whenever your pup is licking himself all over, he’s just getting that sweet vitamin D in. Neat right!
How come dogs lay in the sun?
Not only are they collecting vitamin D, but who doesn’t love a beautiful bright and shining day? Dogs probably enjoy that sweet ray of sunshine much more than you or I do on a daily basis. There’s nothing quite like catching your pup sitting in ray of sunshine on the floor looking like a little lion. We should all take a moment sometimes and just stop and enjoy some sweet sunshine falling on us. Our pets might not have much to do on a daily basis, so they make the best of it, and basking in a ray of sun shine does sound pretty amazing.
